Youth Market proves a success

Wakefield Council gave budding entrepreneurial Wakefield College students the chance to run a stall and entertain shoppers at Pontefract Market this week.

The first ever Youth Market on Wednesday 26 February, run in partnership with Wakefield College, helped students develop their business skills and selling techniques.

The students sold a range of handmade products they had created in their spare time, including bird nest boxes, wine bottle holders, scented candles and Easter greetings cards. The Youth Market also played host to five musical acts, ranging from soloists to bands, performing sets of around 20 minutes at The Buttercross, including songs they have written at college and covers of popular hits.

Cllr David Dagger, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Libraries, said: “This collaboration between the Council and Wakefield College will give young people some small-scale retail experience to help them develop their business ideas.”

Gregg Thompson, Wakefield College Youth Worker said: “All the students thoroughly enjoyed spending time in Pontefract interacting with customers and selling their products. It was a really useful learning experience for our learners.”

The students took over £60 on the day and now hope to hold another stall soon.
