Wakefield College praised by Ofsted Inspectors

Corporate Press Release

Staff and students at Wakefield College are celebrating following a successful Ofsted Inspection visit. The College achieved a rating of ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness, which came despite the new Inspection Framework which includes tougher more stringent inspection criteria.

Two of Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) and six additional inspectors, spent a week at the College’s three campuses last month during which time they spoke to staff, students, governors and key college partners. The Inspectors observed lessons across all campuses to judge the quality of teaching, learning and assessment; they considered the college’s results and its success in preparing students for work or further study and evaluated the effectiveness of leadership and management.

The report highlighted and praised many aspects of the College including the following:

  • The large majority of teaching, learning and assessment is good or better and contributes to students making good progress and displaying good standards of behaviour.
  • Students develop good subject-related skills and knowledge that prepare them for further study and employment.
  • Students benefit from high quality resources that enable them to gain valuable experience on commercially relevant equipment.
  • The excellent levels of support ensure that most students, especially those deemed ‘at risk’ or with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, stay in learning.
  • Good information, advice and guidance assist students to plan for their next steps.
  • Outstanding partnerships benefit students and respond well to local enterprise initiatives in the Wakefield area.
  • The very good promotion of equality and diversity results in an inclusive college.

Wakefield College Principal, Sam Wright said, “I am pleased to announce that following our recent inspection by Ofsted, Wakefield College has been rated as a ‘Good’ college. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the students, staff and governors for all their hard work and commitment which has helped the inspectors to arrive at this decision, as well as the overwhelming show of support we received during the inspection from our partners across the District. The inspection outcome demonstrates that our journey to Outstanding is well underway and gives us renewed confidence that we are doing the right things to get there.

We know there are things to continue to work on and we will not rest on our laurels. We are especially delighted that the Inspection Team recognised the high-quality teaching and learning we provide and the good progress that our students make. These, coupled with the exciting ongoing re-development of our facilities, are transforming the experience of our students at the College.

We will continue to develop the ‘Outstanding partnerships’ commented on by the Inspectors, to ensure our students have the best possible chance of a secure future in the career of their choice, and to play our part in strengthening the District’s economy.

And finally, we are justifiably proud of our inclusivity, meaning regardless of our students’ starting points, we will do our very best for them.

I hope that, like me, students, stakeholders and residents across the District will take pride in this outcome for our local College and will continue to support us to deliver a high-quality learning experience for all of our students.”

Paul Campbell, Vice Chair, commented: “The outcome is a great achievement for the College which reflects the hard work and dedication of the Principal, Senior Leadership Team and College Staff over the last four years in meeting the substantial challenge of the new inspection framework. I am proud to be a Governor of the College and to be associated with its success.”
