College hosts prestigious weightlifting competition

Press Release Sport Event

A female competitor in competition at Wakefield College

Wakefield College and Wakefield Weightlifting Club Hosted this year’s Championships, which saw some of the promising young talent in the country come to the fore. With the Home nations in full preparation for the Commonwealth Games, this was the last time some of the competitors would take to the platform before Glasgow 2014. For others it was a chance to become a national champion and to stake a claim to be part of future major championships.

Competitors had come from across the British Isles from a far afield as Northern Ireland, London, Bristol and Aberdeen to compete in Wakefield, giving the College the chance to show what kind of events it could run. As always there was a lot in interest in young Yorkshire starlet, Rebekah Tiler, who at just 15 is tipped to achieve big things in the sport. The field as a whole was competitive and showed that the sport of Weightlifting is growing in popularity across the country.

The competition included weightlifters in all weight categories, from 55kg females, through to 150kg males in the final group of the day.

Attending the day, British Weight Lifting’s chief executive, Ashley Metcalfe, commented on Wakefield College and Weightlifting Club’s excellent hosting of the event and expressed a desire to run further events at the College in years to come.
