College lecturer lands head coach role at York Knights

Press Release Staff Recognition Sport

Wakefield College’s Rugby League Development Centre (RLDC) coach James Ford has been appointed head coach of York City Knights.

Over the last year, Ford has helped out departing coach Gary Thornton, who Ford replaces after the Knights failed in this year’s playoffs.

The College’s famed RLDC has enjoyed a sustained period of success in recent years, having picked up numerous trophies, whilst a number of its ex-players have gone onto ply their trade at Super League teams across the country.

Students at the College’s RLDC will not only continue to benefit from top-level coaching, but will now have the opportunity to impress coaching staff from a top semi-professional rugby club.

Prior to turning to teaching, Ford enjoyed a successful career spanning more than a decade on the pitch, having played for Championship and Super League clubs including Featherstone Rovers, Sheffield Eagles, Castleford Tigers and Widnes Wolves.

Commenting on his appointment at the Championship One side, Ford said: “I’m really excited about being appointed York City Knights Head Coach, I understand all the responsibilities and pressures of such as position and I’m looking forward to tackling them. I’ve got fantastic support staff and we’ll be working very hard to create a positive learning environment.”
