College hosts VE Day Street Party in aid of Royal British Legion

Customers enjoying food from our special VE Day menu in Gaskell's Restaurant.

Wakefield College hospitality and catering students cooked up a street party in aid of the Royal British Legion as part of celebrations for the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

The event was organised by the College in conjunction with the Royal British Legion to commemorate VE day and provide a new challenge for students. VE day, short for Victory in Europe day, is on May 8th and is celebrated as the day the Second World War ended in 1945.

Customers tucked in to the mouth-watering traditional dishes, which included Welsh rarebit served with a cherry tomato and spring onion salad, smoked salmon sandwiches with horseradish cream cheese on brown bread, and homemade scones with clotted cream and jam.

Students from the Level 1, 2, and 3 full-time hospitality and catering courses held the party on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the College’s training restaurant Gaskell’s, which is open to the public.

Mia Senior, Community Fundraiser for the Royal British Legion in South and West Yorkshire said:

“Wakefield College have been fabulous in supporting The Royal British Legion with their VE day Celebrations for 3 days at Gaskells Restaurant. The students have prepared some delicious food all in a street party themed atmosphere to celebrate 70 years since Victory in Europe. The Royal British Legion are extremely grateful for the support of Wakefield College and the funds they have raised will go a long way in helping us to support more beneficiaries from the Armed Forces Community.”

“This is a fantastic event that enables our students to showcase their talents, providing a different dining experience to our customers, whilst supporting an extremely worthwhile cause. As an ex-member of the Armed Forces, the Royal British Legion is a charity close to my heart.”

Wakefield College offer a range of courses in hospitality and catering, including Level 2 Food, Beverage and Professional Cookery Studies and Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Professional Cookery.
