Wakefield College crowned champions.

Students from Wakefield College’s famed Rugby League team got their season off to a flying start after they were crowned winners of a prestigious nine’s tournament. The annual pre-season event is a chance for Colleges around the country to showcase their talent and set a marker down for the forthcoming season.

Led by captain James Batchelor - who was immense throughout - Wakefield played some superb attacking rugby and managed to stay undefeated throughout the entire tournament. Wakefield opened the group stages with a victory against Newcastle Thunder Academy, followed by victories against Halifax Elite Rugby Academy, Doncaster and St. Marys.

Craven College proved to be tricky opponents in the semi final but Wakefield showed tremendous resilience on their own goal line to go through to the final. The final was a closely fought battle between Wakefield and Calderdale College with some fantastic attacking rugby being played by both sides. Wakefield showed tremendous resilience defending three back-to-back sets on their own goal line before Joe Crossland finished off a great team move by running the length of the field to score Wakefield’s first points. Calderdale fought back with a try of their own before Wakefield scored the deciding try and managed to hold on to their narrow lead to claim the victory shield.

Coach Mark Applegarth was immensely proud of his team and was full of praise for each member of the squad. Mark said: “I thought every individual was superb with some really good rugby being played throughout the tournament, we have a great team spirit and I told them to go out and enjoy playing some attacking rugby today which they did. We’re a young team and it's a credit to the players to turn up and play how they did”

Coaches also praised Remi Grayson who claimed the tournaments top try scorer title with 11. Special mentions were also made for Tom Metcalfe for his outstanding defence, Travis Fisher for his direct carries, Reece Butterworth for his organisation and passing and James Batchelor for his outstanding contribution overall.
