Wakefield College Principal Sam Wright with players from Castleford Tigers and award winners

The annual Wakefield College 14-16 Awards took place on Thursday 5th May and saw a number of awards for students at local schools.

The event acknowledges and celebrates the successes of 14-16 learners from local secondary schools who attend College on part-time and full-time vocational pathways.

Castleford Tigers players Ben Roberts and Jy Hitchcox attended and presented certificates and trophies to the winning students who were:

14-16 Student of the Year in Construction - Will Barker (Kettlethorpe High School) 
14-16 Student of the Year in Hair and Beauty - Amy Webster (The King’s School) 
14-16 Student of the Year in Engineering & Motor Vehicle - Louis Nickols (Kettlethorpe High School) 
14-16 Recognition Award - Kayleigh Harrison (Carleton Community High School) 
14-16 Principal’s Award - Harry Dyson (Horbury Academy) 
14-16 Student of the Year – Sophie Gladwell (Kettlethorpe High School)

Faye Banks, a former Wakefield College student and current Electrical Transmission and Asset Manager for National Grid was the Guest Speaker at the event. Faye who won the prestigious national Young Woman Engineer of the Year in 2004, spoke about the opportunities that are available to young people in vocational subjects if they work hard and aim high.

James Pennington, Partnership Manager at Wakefield College said: “We are very proud of all our students and this event is really important as it allows us to recognise and celebrate their achievements and progress with us. 

“We work in partnership with local schools to offer students, who are more likely to follow a career in a vocational area, the opportunity to do this while they are still at school through an engaging, alternative curriculum.”
