A Wakefield College student has signed professional terms with Wakefield Trinity after impressing with a string of performances in the College’s Category 3 team.

Zayne Cloete has just signed a one-year contract with the Super League team and aims to follow in the footsteps of former student James Batchelor in progressing all the way to the first team.

Wakefield Coach and Performance Manager, Mark Applegarth was delighted Zayne has progressed through to the Academy setup. He said: “We are delighted another College student has gained an opportunity to get into professional rugby league after coming through the Category 3 system. Zayne is a real athlete and knows he still has a long way to go but I’m sure he will make the most of this opportunity.

“It is pleasing to see the pathway is proving that opportunities to get into professional rugby league are still available. There are some quality players around and we intend to create opportunities for all.”

Zayne is one of many students developing on the pathway thanks in part to opportunities provided by Wakefield College. The College is a leading institution for player development helping young athletes into professional and semi-professional sports including rugby league and football.

Young people interested in following in Zayne’s footsteps should contact the College’s Academy of Sporting Excellence. Students will be given the opportunity to train under the watchful eyes of professional coaches whilst gaining a recognised qualification at the same time.
