College Coaches in National Squads

Wakefield College are proud to have both Men’s Head Football Coach and Men’s Head Rugby Coach part of the national teams.

Ben Severn, Head Football Coach has been selected as one of the coaches for the England Colleges U18s National team on top of his duties at Wakefield College.

Part of his role is to talent ID players in the college and the north of England to find the best unsigned players out there eligible for England selection.

Severn has recently come back from a tour of Italy where the national team played in an international tournament against national teams from Italy, Romania, Albania, Greece, Wales and Malta and is preparing for a tour to Spain in the coming months.

Going forward Severn is looking for players with the right attitude and ability to be elite and compete at the top level. The search is on scouting now for next year’s national squad selection starting with the current and future Wakefield College students.

Mark Applegarth, Head Rugby Coach and Head of Youth at Wakefield Trinity has also taken the national step by being selected as a coach for the England Rugby League national talent pathway.

Applegarths job is to develop the elite players from the U16 age group and progress them with the aim of playing for the England Men’s Rugby League team. The role gives him hands on national team experience and a new elite skill set he can add to the already successful rugby set up here at Wakefield College. 

By having two national team coaches this shows the strength and quality Wakefield College are investing into their Football and Rugby programmes and providing the best opportunities for the students.
