Two Wakefield College students have passed the first stage of Skillweld competition 2018. The competition has 3 progressive stages; each stage builds on the last to challenge the competitor to develop their weld skills. At each stage the competitors Welding test pieces are marked against a set criteria.

The aim of Skillweld is to raise the standard of training to provide multi skilled welders, with increase employability, and productivity.

The college held a Passive Heat where each student had to produce eight welds using MIG welding, TIG welding and MMA welding.

In order to qualify for the next stage a score of over 250 was required out of a maximum of 400. Both Level 3 Fabrication and Welding students, Tyler Pickard and Brian Fisher scored over 300 points and have qualified for the next stage.

Tyler who works at Production Park will take part in the Semi Final at Derby College on 28th June 2018. Brian who works at B A Fisher will go to Grimsby College on 11th July 2018.

They will have to produce 4 joints:

  1. Pipe to plate aluminium
  2. Stainless steel overhead fillet
  3. MMA pipe in 45 degree fixed position
  4. T-fillet vertical MIG

The Skillweld National Final will be held in November at The Skills Show. The top 10 competitors nationally will be invited to compete.

Trevor Murgatroyd, Fabrication and Welding Lecturer said: “Brian and Tyler have been rewarded for their effort by winning the passive heat and now are having to work harder again to put up a good show in the next round. Both lads are very keen and have embraced the competitive spirit but still willing to work together and help each other improve. A credit to their Company’s and the College.”

Wakefield college are projected to hold the Semi Finals form 2019 onwards.
