Wakefield College Women’s Rugby Development Programme came out on top in the RFL’s first Rugby 9s Festival for 2019/20.
The tournament was hosted by Wakefield College at Eastmoor Dragons ARLFC on Wednesday 9 October, and had representative teams attending from Warrington, Wigan and others in a great spectacle for Women’s Rugby League.
Wakefield went home from the tournament unbeaten, winning two games and drawing one leaving them with the highest points total on the day alongside good quality performances to match in their first competitive fixtures as a team.
The programme, run in partnership with Wakefield Trinity Women’s Rugby League team, ensures that team members receive an excellent education at Wakefield College while continuing to develop their technical, tactical and physical abilities.
Head of Competitive Sport Ben Severn said:
“It’s taken a while to set up, but we have a great package at the college and can see the girls developing weekly and now they are getting their rewards for all their hard work and commitment.
“The men’s rugby programme is highly successful and being able to offer a similar provision for the girls is vital”.
The next Ruby 9s tournament takes place next month, with a few 13-a-side fixtures penciled in to fill the gaps.
