Hair & Beauty Press Release

This month sees the launch of an exciting new partnership for Wakefield College’s Hair & Beauty department.

The partnership, set up with celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton, known for the original Channel 4 hit TV show '10 Years Younger,' and his new Andrew Barton London Education (ABLE) programme, will equip students with industry-level skill and abilities.

The launch event will be held at Wakefield College’s Castleford Campus Open Event on Wednesday 20th October at the Castleford Campus where Andrew Barton himself will be offering talks to prospective students.

With over three decades of hairdressing experience, Andrew is renowned as hairdressing royalty and holds a string of awards including British Hairdresser of The Year, British Hair Icon and Honorary Doctorate “Hon D Arts” for his services to the hairdressing industry.

One of the UK’s most celebrated hairdressing names, Andrew’s work graces global magazines from cover to editorial, TV campaign to print advertising and is on speed dial to the British beauty press for his hair authority.

From creative to classic haircutting and contemporary hairstyling, the ABLE programme will use Andrew’s vast experience and knowledge to work with the college tutors to create a truly tailored education for students.

Andrew Barton said: “Hairdressing is often overlooked as a career choice, but it has taken me around the world and given me opportunities I never dreamed of – especially as a boy from Yorkshire. I’m so excited for the partnership between ABLE and Wakefield College - it will not only inspire a new generation of hair professionals but also provide them with the skills and knowledge to become successful in whatever area of this fantastic industry they choose for their future.”

Students will receive hands-on practical training at a masterclass with Andrew and will attend an external Aspirational Day to explore trends, develop their skills and confidence in the latest cutting techniques. Andrew will also share his creative process in designing a haircut and how he adapts the latest trends to the clients in his salon. And it’s not just about hair. Andrew will immerse the students in salon life, explaining the key ‘other’ skills they need to develop to be ‘salon ready’ and the opportunities this amazing industry can offer.

Hair & Beauty Curriculum Development Manager. Rachel Anderson said: “Andrew has been involved with Wakefield College previously to do training with our tutors, but this will be on a different level as it involves our students too. Our students will hugely benefit from Andrew's experience and expertise in the industry. We can't wait to get started.”
