Students celebrate their graduation success

Students from the University Centre at Wakefield College celebrated their graduation ceremonies over the weekend.  Two congregations of more than 400 gathered at Wakefield Cathedral on Saturday to see students from the classes of 2020 and 2021 receive higher level qualifications.  This year’s guest speaker Dr David Powell, from the University of Huddersfield, took the opportunity to praise the College for its hard work and congratulated the graduates on their achievements.

David recounted his time as a student and offered advice to graduates on how they can make the most of their new qualifications and go on to achieve success in their chosen field.

David said: “I was honoured to be this year’s guest speaker and award graduates their hard-earned scrolls which was a real pleasure. Achieving a degree-level qualification during a global pandemic is no mean feat and I wish the graduates all the best for the future in whatever they choose to do. I am sure they will be successful and hope I was able to offer encouragement through my own personal experiences and journey."

Wakefield College Principal and Chief Executive, Sam Wright, said, “Following a difficult couple of years, it was wonderful we could once again come together to celebrate the achievements of our higher education learners. Saturday’s event was another proud moment for me as Principal and I was delighted to be there to celebrate our learners’ success.”

In excess of 450 students achieved a Higher Education qualification at the College’s University Centre including Higher National Diplomas, Higher National Certificates, Foundation Degrees and Degrees in a wide variety of areas including Education, Computing, HR, Childhood Studies, Care, Sports, Music, Engineering, Business and Management, Web Design, Theatre, Art & Design and Accounting.
